DG’s 5K Challenge raises nearly $82,000

Deputy Governor Franz Manderson announced last week that the 2019 DG’s 5K Challenge raised $81,675 for the Cayman Islands Crisis Centre, Alex Panton Foundation and the Special Needs Foundation Cayman.

The total for this year’s event, held in both Grand Cayman and Cayman Brac, was $11,675 more than the $70,000 goal that Manderson had set. The Little Cayman leg wasn’t held, but will return in 2020.

The deputy governor presented cheques for $27,224.95 each to representatives from the three charities.

“I am thrilled that we raised such an impressive amount for each of these tremendous causes,” he said. “This year’s donation has exceeded our expectations and is testament to the generosity of our corporate sponsors and is a true marker of the community-mindedness of both the public and private sectors in the Cayman Islands.”

Manderson announced the fundraising total at a reception at Government House to thank the event sponsors, the DG’s 5K Challenge committee, and volunteers. Nearly 2,000 people participated in this year’s walk/run.

“I’m really proud of how much this event has grown since we launched in 2014 and I am grateful to everyone who has helped make it a success,” said Manderson. “It is so rewarding to support great community causes and work on improving our own health at the same time.”
